What does ‘dialect’ mean? Why am I choosing a country here?

The ISO 639-3 standard for languages does not provide a system for identifying dialects, language varieties and accents. However, at Appen, we want to represent this diversity. To do this, in CrowdGen, we use a combination of language + country. The country you choose is the country that’s most closely associated with your dialect, accent or language variety. Since every language isn’t spoken in every country, we’ve constrained the choices here to known pairs of languages and countries. But as our database and coverage expands, we may add further options. Please let us know if your dialect or language variety isn’t covered.

Note: English is widely learned and used for media, commerce and research in many countries around the world, and so there are many countries available to select in our system.

If you have learned English as a foreign or additional language, you can indicate your native country for the question ‘What is the dialect?’. This tells us that, due to the influence of your first language (e.g. Russian) on your second (English), you speak or write English with an accent that is typical for that country. So for example, English (Russia) means that you speak, or write, English in ways that are typical of someone whose first language is Russian.

You may also wish to indicate the particular dialect of English that you have learned, and the level to which you have learned it. Typically (but not always) this will be English (United States of America) or English (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).
