Project Salamander (P26P6) aims to improve in-car safety by helping vehicles quickly detect unsafe driver and passenger behaviour using advanced eye and face tracking technology.

▷ Sit in a parked car fitted with cameras.
▷ Perform simple actions like drinking, using your phone, or pretending to sleep.
▷ Some sessions may involve wearing props like sunglasses and prosthetics like pregnancy belly to help us record seatbelt use across a wider range of body types.

▷ Allow temporary camera installation in your vehicle
▷ Drive to Anzac Parade, Kingsford, Sydney on your scheduled date
▷ Set aside up to 2 hours (sessions are approximately 90 minutes)
▷ Must not have previously participated in any Appen Salamander in-car project

Additional forms and surveys may be needed to fill out before being booked or once at the venue, if you are selected to participate in this study.

You’ll need to drive to the meeting point, but your car will stay parked for the entire session after that.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, please inform the project team as soon as possible so your slot can be given to another participant.

Appen also reserves the right to cancel scheduled sessions due to:

  • Technical failures
  • Inclement weather
  • If a participant (12 years or older) is unable to follow instructions


In the event of a cancellation, Appen will make every effort to provide ample notice.
