Safety first

All tasks will be conducted safely under supervision while the car is parked, no driving is required.

Get paid to help reduce in-car injuries

Project Salamander (PSP3) aims to improve in-car safety technology by enhancing its ability to quickly detect and respond to unsafe driver and passenger positions. The tasks are designed to simulate scenarios that could compromise safety in a real driving situation.

Monitoring in-car movements

Before the session begins, our project supervisors will temporarily install four cameras on the windscreen of your car to record the session. The setup is low-impact (using suction cups) and won’t damage your vehicle. During the session, while your car remains stationary, you’ll be guided to perform actions such as drinking, talking on a cell phone, buckling your seatbelt, pretending to sleep, and looking around.

Compensation:

Receive an eGift card based on the number of people in the car: $150 for one, $290 for two, $420 for three, $540 for four, and $650 for five.

Apply to Project Salamander (PSP3)

**Please note that if you have previously taken part in any previous Sassafras Project S, PSP2, P26P1 or P26P3 you are not eligible to participate. Do not fill out this form.

We have a new image data collection project that will further improve car-safety technology.
Unlike previous Appen In-car data collections , the data will be recorded in participants' cars, not Appen cars. Not all participants must bring their own car, but all cars used will belong to participants. Cars manufactured before 2012 are not eligible to be used in this project.
Please be aware that should your car be used for the project, it will require us to install video recording equipment. The set up is low impact and will not damage your car.

In PSP3, recordings will occur with 1 to 5 participants in the car at the same time. We encourage participants to bring their families, i.e. parents, kids (8 years and older), and even pets. You can also come with a bunch of friends. This project requires you to sit in a parked car, either alone or with up to 4 other occupants, where you will perform a number of actions (in a natural manner) where we can track the eye, head and body movement whilst wearing various props such as sunglasses, face masks, hats, etc. You'll perform tasks such as leaning, large hand movements, using your phone, checking the mirrors, and turning to look at passengers in the rear seats. Young children can even stand on their seats at times. Participants cars should arrive in their natural state, i.e. do not remove items that you would normally keep in your car. The more cluttered, the better. The data collected will be used for learning purposes to improve driver’s distraction recognition technology.

Payment Type
Payment is made with eGift cards of various values depending on the number of participants per car. We are unable to pay cash.

  • 2 people $290
  • 3 people $420
  • 4 people $540
  • 5 people $650

This project is paid by task and not at an hourly rate. The session will take approximately 135 minutes. Please allow up to 150 minutes in total. This is an in-person project, therefore you must come to our location in the CSIRO site in West Lindfield to participate in the project.
